Hey guys I'm piecing back together an old pIII 450mhz machine to use as a server ov sorts. My question is can the cpu be cooled passively or will it require some sort of a fan?
it's an old hewlet packard vectra if it helps :)

IIRC, those things were hot.

I ran my Atom fanless, but with big fins on the Zalman H/S. It died of heat exhaustion. Not dead, but **** slow. I wouldn't recommend it.

Ok, like I said this thing is missing some parts. I moved from a ps2-286 to a skt-A so I never used this intel design till now. It sorta appears like a Nintendo game slot and cartridge. It has no evidence of a fan so I'll have to make a mount for one. Did notice though it wasn't real hot while i was installing win-XP.

P3's weren't as hot. P4's is what you're thinking of, MoM. P4's were Intel's hotplates lol.
