With Christmas coming up,presents to return and driveways to shovel, I'l have a little bit of extra cash in my pocket so I'm thinking about a new upgrade. I don't want to do a major upgrade like a whole new mobo or cpu. Whaty should I get?

I could get a new cpu: 3.2GHz w/ 1MB cache 800MHz fsb and HT for 218$ here: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-172&depa=1

OR

I could get an Nvidia 6600GT 128MB DDR3 500/1000MHZ for 225$ here: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-080&depa=1

I'm trying to get the upgrade that will get me the best fps difference. I think it would be the vidcard.

If you suggest anything else please let me know. My budget is 250$

My current specs are:
Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro 800MHz FSB Dual channel
1280MB of PC3200 Ram in Dual channel config
ATI Radeon 9800SE 325/325
Celeron 2.8GHz 400MHz FSB 128KB cache @ 3.107GHz
80GB WD 5400RPM IDE HDD
CD/DVD Reader
DVD+-R/RW 8x and CD-RW 42x
Creative Audigy Platinum w/ front 5.25 bay

Wait until eVGA releases the 6600GT or if you don't want to wait for that, get the processor, because personally I think XFX sucks

Yeah I think It would definitely restrict it but I think the vidcard would get me better performance on games. It lags just playin the M.O.H.P.A. demo.

Would there be a performance difference between eVGA and XFX? and when is the eVGA 6600GT AGP version due?

I guess I don't see it the way you guys do, I think I would get a larger noticable difference on Fps with the new card rather than the cpu.

BTW, Codeine, do you have 2 video cards or is that in another system? Also, How much did the SCSI drive and controller cost you? Those must be freakin fast!:)

the release date for the 6600GT is end of november, beginning of december, looks like XFX got a jump on the gun, however I believe it's more of a quality brand issue more than it is performance wise. I think eVGA makes good quality cards and no doubt they will put on hefty heatsinks just like with the 6800's some IMO it just seems it's be worth it to wait for them, but yeah you do need another processor cause those celerons are not number crunchers thats for sure.

BUT you gotta remember these games are getting very GPU intensive not CPU intensive so I'd say the CPU won't really create that much of a bottleneck and you'll have better performance in games

Thanks for the input everyone. I want to have a definite decision though so I need your help again. I want to buy the upgrade that will get me the most noticable difference in "FPS" while playing games like: Halo, Americas Army, Doom 3, Half life 2, CS Source, and M.O.H.P.A.

I can choose between these:
$215 P4 3.2GHz Prescott 800MHz FSB: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-176&depa=1
$225 XFX 6600 GT 500/1000MHz 128-bit: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-150-080&depa=1
$280 Albatron 6800 325/700MHz 256-bit: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-170-056&depa=1

I'm trying not to spend more than around $250
Even though the 6800 I chose is a little bit slower than the 6600GT it is 256-bit. Will the slower 6800 256-bit outperform the faster 6600GT 128-bit? I think it would but I'm not sure.

First of all the benchmarks I've seen mark a 6600gt higher than a 6800 regular. so now you're between a 6600gt and the processer.

I say upgrade the CPU because the Video Card you have now isn't all that bad, and the CPU you have is not up to par at all, I think you'll survive longer on the current video card than you would with the current CPU.

Thus I say buy a 6600gt.
