The only place it would be lacking then is the processor. But he could always overclock that with some good cooling. Then the system would be a lot better because the vid card is 3 times as good.

For the hard drive, I would instead get 2 of these:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...135-106&depa=1

For the video card I would get the x800 xl you linked to.

For the power supply I would get the 2nd one because you won't have to run adapters.

For the motherboard I would get the ASUS one.

For the ram I would get this:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...145-450&depa=1

That would make a very nice computer.

-DFI lanparty ultra nf4 $155 ypu could also get the abit an8 mobo
-eVGA 6600gt pci-e $179 this is good becasue when you want to upgrade you can just buy a second
-Dual channel 1 gig of ram approx $115 most youll ever need
-Antec true blue 350w $60 depending on your old power supply it may not be enough to power this system which is why i included it
-instead of getting a power supply you could get a better cpu hsf i would recomend a zalman this one is f****n awesome

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16835118115
-80gig sata hdd $60

-Some fans and round cables $40 fans are important

He has an $800 budget and he wants a great gaming computer. Why would he want to settle for a 6600 gt? That card won't keep up with the top games for very long.
And I don't think round cables are necessary, especially if you are using SATA hard drives.
If you take out all the spiff you have more money for the better components that matter more.
