the system i think he should get is:

AMD 3500 64
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Socket 939) Motherboard
Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200C2 Pro TwinX
9800pro
Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000RPM SATA (for windows and system stuff)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 200GB SATA 8MB Cache (for videos)
Pioneer DVR-108 16x DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter
Thermaltake Silver XASER III

that system would easily cope with anything u have to throw at it.
only thing u should think about is if ul want to go for a pci-e graphics card later on. If u will be you are better waiting for the AMD pci-e mobos coming out but this will mean ul have to dump the 9800pro. up to you.

Basically the good brands are:

Wester Digital for hard drives

Plextor for Optical drives

AMD for CPU's (especially the 64's)

Corsair for Memory (XMS is best)

MSI or Abit for motherboards


I would suggest getting:

any large Western Digital Hard drive
1Gb DDR400 Corsair XMS (not necessarily dual channel *gasp*
any AMD 64 (the 754 would be best because of the large L2 cache)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum or Abit AV8
Plextor CD/DVD Drive
for cases, its really up to you and your tastes, but some good brands are: Thermaltake, Coolermaster and Lian Li. my personal choice would be the Thermaltake Tsunami Dream but predominately, its your choice.

SO what is the budget anyway? There is a lot of good input in this thread, but basically, all that stuff people are listing is expensive. If you have $1000, then go for the gusto, but if you have like $500, then maybe you need to pick and choose. Just look at prices and you can decide obviously. The low end mobo is probably going to be over $100 for the socket 939, the raptors are expensive @ $105 for a 36.7 gig (but the best), corsair RAM is great, but its $152 for a gig of their cheap stuff (still good) and then your drives. I prefer NEC for a DVD burner, but thats me. Good luck.

My target is around $1000-$1200. I am doing my searching at NewEgg.com. I've decided on a Thermaltake case and am still deciding on the other components.

go with a 3.2ht cpu... overclock it slightly. get a gig of 3200...pci-e graphics card. its a cheap setup and will allow you to play games WHILE video editing
