NVidia 6800 Ultra blows radeon X800 and 9800pro outta the water 4 that matter, tested on a believe 13 benchmarks including sandra and 3d mark05

it's also hundreds more...

why does everyone recommend this card to people who are on a budget? this makes no sense to me.

well this thread is way off-base... but in regards to the comp yet again i dont think 4 gigs of ram will be necessary even in 2007... so once again i say 2 gigs dual channel, stick with the rest and the 5700. and onboard sound

It will handle memory in non- dual channel mode. But if you plan on getting lots of memory, then why not get dual channel memory? It will run way faster. Or are you just planning on getting 512MB? If you get 1GB, then get a dual channel kit (2x512MB sticks) and you will get more performance for not much extra cost.

I agree she is not going to need that high end machine

if you insist on going socket 939, might I suggest getting a 3000+ or 3200+
they're not much more than $200 aus

the 9800 pro is pretty good, it's a high performance card but about half the price of the X800's and 6800's

for photo editing, she might want a fairly big hard drive, maybe 120 to 160 gig, Seagate are my favourite hard drives. SATA or IDE will be fine

you'll notice i was comparing the 6800U to a regular X800 (not XT) and a 9800 PRO. so yes i do see a hundred or more dollar difference.

(PRO model...i think that's regular. if not then you can expect an even greater difference)

thats a $117 difference, probably more with a cheaper X800 non RPO, and probably $200-$300 diff with the 9800PRO.
