Mobo/Proccesor/Chipset

Sorry for the stupid questions this is my first build. I want to build a good gaming pc that will last a couple of years with minimal upgrading. I play games like battlefield 1942 and want to be able to play the new upcoming games. Here are some Questions.

1) AMD or Intel? Why? What is the difference between E&C intels?
2) What is a chipset? Which one is good?
3) What mother board to get?

Here are somethings i put togther, tell me what you think based on the mobo/proccesor/chipset.

Chipsets is a set of chips on the motherboard that collectively controls the memory cache, external buses and some peripherals . There are couples factors to improve your pc gaming , not only the cpu .

I've always heard that AMD was geared more for gaming machines and they seem to be cheaper as well.

And don't forget the most importand piece of hardware.....the graphics card!! ATI Radeon seems to be the card of choice.

I just built my first machine recently and it was a lot of fun. Good idea to come here first and get some advice from all the computer wizards!! Good luck.

Keeping a gaming PC current with minimal upgrading means that you'll need to get good stuff now, so I can't see the system being low budget...
I have an AMD 2500 which works well at the moment and AMD chips are cheaper than Intel ones(of comparable speed in games).
If budget is a consideration then I would get a good mobo (Nforce 2 Ultra 400 chipset for AMD or Intel 875 chipset for Intel).
I would also buy a high end graphics card but not the flashest one as you useually don't get the value, go for a GeForce FX 5900 or a Radeon 9800 pro.
The next consideration is the RAM, you should be looking at PC3200 RAM at least 512Mb, If you plan on overclocking go for some low latency (Cl 2) OCZ or Cosair.
You should get at least a 100Gb hard disk to keep you out of trouble for a while something like a Western Digital or IBM, I have heard that SATA drives don't like overclocking.
If you are building a high end system then you should get a high wattage power supply 400W or better, Antec Truepowers are meant to be good.
Obviously this is not an exact guide - just my opinion.

i think dom meant to say at least 1G of ram, that's a very important factor to how your games run now and later on down the road. I went ahead, saved up an got the ati 9800xt, insane card, but your best bet would most likely be to wait for the new cards coming out soon.

I understand your concerns on building a computer that will still hold its own a year from now. I would however change your motherboard to one with which supports a 875 chipset. The 865PE is good but the 875 is intels flagship. I would also have to say that 512Mbs for memory is ok for normal use but for gaming, I would strongly recommend 1 Gb, as you probably noticed shopping around for motherboards that there is a reason why they can hold up to 4 Gb's of RAM, it is for heavy applications like games that can take advantage of this.
