Materials list for a mod

Dragging on buying a rotary tool, figure great deals will be coming up in the holiday season.

While I was at work I noticed I could push a mounting pin (roughly 2" pin) all the way into one of the busts so I decided to do some exploratory surgery. It looks like the busts are actually just linen over about 1.5" of compressed foam, I thought they might be particle board since that is what the base is made of.

I marked off a 6"x10"x5" section on the back of one, used a box-cutter for the initial cut through the linen, then tried to use a vice-grip holding a razor blade to get through the foam.
Its so dense that even though I had to struggle to clamp it shut the blade still pivoted while slicing. Then I tried a small kitchen knife, it cuts through but is so slow going it'd take me weeks to get all the way around.

So, any suggestions on other household implements I could use, or should I just go rent a sawzall or something from the local home depot?
