First, to test the system under load download a program called prime95. While it is running monitor the temperature of the system. Run it for a while. Also read the sticky at the top of the forum.

Overclocking isn't just for games, it will increase performance for everything really. No programs will suffer, everything will go faster.

Just be very careful, go up in small increments.

I ahev that mobo. Put in the driver CD and install Easy Tune 5. This will display your temperatures and voltages for reference in windows. however I would not recommend overclocking with this utility, just use it for temp monitoring. Save overclocking for the BIOS. Also make sure your BIOS is version F2. Should say something like GA-K8NF-9 F2 when it loads up.
