just wondering :) is there anything in the specs or is it just trial and error?

Moved to the right subforum.

Well, it's some what of a trial and error thing when boards first come out, but there are generally certain chipsets that are better at overclocking than others.

For example, generally speaking, P45 boards are better overclockers than P43 boards. In AMD boards, 790GX/FX boards are better overclockers than 780 and lower boards.

alright thanks man :) what about brands? is there better or worse or would they all be the same just different sticker when it comes to that ?

Not all are the same...if you check out the WR overclocks on the CPU-Z validator website, you can see the boards that they used, that's always a decent place to start. :p

Best way to tell if your mobo is good is to see what results other people got with your mobo. Or you could do trail and error... but, another component could be the bad overclocker.

Some seem to be better then others. Biostar made some beastly p45 mobo's that broke a few WR for highest FSB and I think the highest OC for an e8600.

Another example is the world record for the q6600 was on a dfi dk x38 :).
