Default gskill HZ vs. xms2c4

okay fellas....here's the conclusion that i have reached:

if you want raw speed in your ram:
go for th HZ's. i have managed to get them to run at 1100+mhz with 5-5-5-15-2t timings.
they will not run over 950ishmhz with cas 4, even with 2T command rate.
they also run great at 800mhz with 4-3-3-8 2T.
they will do 4-4-4-12 1T @ 800mhz, which is pretty good (most ram is made to run at 2T command)
all these settings at 2.2V
this (the 1100mhz) will give you a better time in most benchmarks, definitely a better time in super pi.
so...if you are getting a c2d rig, and your concern is absolute speed in your ram, go gskill.

if you want low latency, with good timings:
go with xms2 c4.
i can make them run at 950+mhz with 4-3-3-5 1T (and thats f**kin fast boy-o) with 2.4v
i can get about 1000mhz with 4-4-4-12 2T with 2.3V
with 5-5-5-15 2T i can go to about 1050mhz
so...if you are buying (or upgrading) an amd system, your latency will be more important than your raw speed...
so get xms2c4.
thats my conclusion from both sets of ram i own. take from it what you will, my friends

How can you tell what speed your ram is running at? I know where and how to set the timings but when I did my OC I had to set my memory to ddr2 667 which I assumed was the speed. When I look at the memory tab on cpu-z it shows the speed to be 378MHz or something like that... Does that sound right?

If you set your memory to DDR2-667 speeds, the ram would be running around 333MHz. But 378MHz is fine.

So is that the speed that everyone is talking about OC to over 1000MHz??? If so I'm feeling pretty darn slow...

lol....well when they mention 1000MHz, it's really 500MHz. 1000MHz is the effective speed, and 500MHz is the real speed. Remember DDR2 speeds are doubled.

So if I were able to get that 378 speed up past 500 then I would be OC'ing my ram over 1000 MHz??

Then if I set my ram to DDR2 800 that would show 400 or so in cpu-z? I've tried that and usually my computer will just black screen and I have to clrear cmos to get it back up...

Maybe your ram isn't getting enough voltage. What is it currently at. Is your G. Skills, the HZs? If so, I commonly see people put it at the 2.1-2.3 range.

Yes...if you set it past 500, you'd have it overclocked past 1000MHz. Same with DDR2-800. It would show 400MHz, because 400 x 2 = 800.
