What type of paint can I use on an alluminium case can you use just spray can paint? I would like to put a red and black logo onto a htpc style case it will need to be quite durable as an LCD monitor with stand will be placed on top of it.

Regular spray paint will stick to it, If you need it to be durable then you're gonna have to put a clear finish on it too, otherwise It'll chip off.

Just get some spray-on Clear Coat.

If you want the paint to stick real well, you'll need to sand the case really good, use a few coats of primer, sand lightly, then apply 5 or so light coats of the paint of your color, lightly sanding with a fine grit sandpaper between every coat. Then apply two coats or so of the clear coat.

so sand with varying degrees of sandpaper until flat then apply paint 5 times lightly sanding very finely inbetween coats then apply two more coats of clear do i need to sand between the clear coats?? what type of brit/sandpaper do i use?? sorry im a complete noob to painting metal.

I'm not real great of a painter either. :)

Maybe one of these guides will help:

Well you'll need about 600 grit to start, and depending on how good you want this to be you can go all the way to 2000(although thats getting extreme). As with any painting the preperation ends up determining the quality of the final coat. So the question is how far are you willing to go?

Edit: ohh and remember your sanding on alum and not steel, and that means sand paper will cut into the softer alum faster, using courser grits means deeper scratches.
