Default Building a Computer

Ok, Im totally new to computers, and also totally new to this site. And i have a couple questions.

1. If I am building a computer, how do you know if the parts are compatible? I read somewhere that the motherboard you have may not run with your other components.

2. Any good sites on building a computer? I plan on building a computer as soon as i get the money, and want to know how hard it is to build one.

Thanks for your time.
