on earlier PC's, they used a CMOS to store all the BIOS's editable data, since the BIOS chip was read-only.

on more modern PC's, you have a flash ROM which you can edit, and now although they don't have a CMOS anymore, the name is still there

At least it still works the same. Flash/reset etc.
