Before you buy the videocard i highly suggest you get at least another 512mb of ram.

I thought my system was bottlenecking with my 6800GT.

When i got an extra 512mb of ram it made all of my games much smoother. now i have a total of 1024mb. no more choppy games. Now the only bottleneck is in my processor, which i should be upgrading this winter.

Here i come Venice!

The ram should be fine for now, but the real thing that's holding you back is that video card. Switch it out as soon as possible. Oh, the 9600 pro suxs compared to a 6600.

512mb to 1gb will make a nice difference in game smoothness but I'd hit that GPU up first.

the 6800gt still beates out that XL.

But if you have 300 - the XL is a good buy indeed.
