ok so the amd athlon 64 fx-55 is the fastest current chip. But it runs atv 2.4ghz. now the pentium 4 extreme edition runs at 3.46ghz!!! and what about the pentium 4 3.8 ghz? doesnt more GHZ mean more power? can someone please explain it to me

The AMD archatecture is different than Intel. Think of it like this :

Intel's chips are faster but the data has futher the travel in the processor
Amd's chips are a little slower but has a lot less distance the travel in the porcessor

So overall the AMD can process data quicker than the Intel chips.

The FX-55 is equal to the P4 570J. The P4EE is $250 more and it gets beaten by the 570J. AMD and Intel are going to be tied again once E0 stepping replaces all the D0 stepping processors. Talk to Nubius and he will explain how GHz/MHz is not the main focus of companies and is not an accurate measure of performance. That is why Intel held off on the 4 GHz P4 580J. They wanted to discourage the consumers from thinking that MHz/GHz is the only thing that counts.
