Default best way to connect hd to laptop externally

What is the best way to connect a hard disk to a laptop externally?

I have a USB cable that connects to the hd (data+power) and, on the other end, connects to the computer via USB.

Does this work on notebooks? (the hd is for desktops not notebooks)

Is it safe to do so? I know that the hds are very fragile and I have a risk of loosing my data?

Are external hds better? do they have some sort of protection or so? Do they also work on notebooks?

It doesn't really matter as long as you take care of your disk. Remember that one drop could destroy some data.
