Hi Guys,

I am seriously considering buying an aftermarket CPU cooler, as on stock my 4200+ is idling at 42 degree and at 50+ on load. As well as this the stock AMD cooler seems quite load sometimes, particuarly when booting!

Anyway, so I was looking for an extremely good cpu cooler, preferably very quiet, yet very efficient. I've read that the ThermalTake Big Typhoon is extremely good. But I'd like opinions from people on the site.

Thanks very much,

Charlie -

basicly any zalman model will decrease your temps and the noise but id go with an all copper one if u want to see bigger improvements and better overclockage. IE: Zalman CNPS 7700CU or the Zalman CNPS9500LED

big typhoon and CNPS9500. Though the big typhoon is sometimes better...well most of the time :p

I love my Scythe Ninja, saw a significant decrease in temps from it (and i have a P4). My temp dropped 10C or so, runs at around 43C on idle, 50C on load (hey, its a P4 so wut do you expect, goin to use it for my Opty 144 i'm gettin in a week or two though) I probably dont even need the stock fan on it since i have two intake fans blowin right on it but not like it matters, it has low noise anywayz. But i've heard good things about the big typhoon too. Check tom's hardware, they ussually have CPU coolin tests heres the latest one i've seen: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/04/25/six_coolers_for_amd_processors/

Gigabyte 3-D Rocket Pro

3800+ X2 @ 2.6, Idles @ 30C, never gets higher then 46 last time I checked.

I also have a good amount of fans ha.

well i think they are around the same price and considering my x2@2.6ghz idles at around 26-27 degrees and never goes above 43 degrees i would say the typhoon is better. don't ask a question like "best cpu cooler overall" if you are only looking at air coolers :p. clearly a nice phase change unit or LN or even water cooling is a lot better than these.
