Benchmarking?

How does this work? Do I just run a program on my computer and it tells me a number that I can compare to other rigs? If so, where do I find these programs?

I just want to test overall computer performance, and Proccessor performance also.

I found this website? Do I use one of these programs?

There are many, many kinds of benchmarking programs out there. Some of the popular ones are:

The 3DMark series http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4935 which does graphics, memory, etc. Gives you a raw score that you can compare with other people's.

SuperPI
http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36 One of the less accurate ones, most people chose the 1M mark, in which your computer is timed on how long it takes to reach 1 million digits of pie.

CPU Bench:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/CPUBench_d1018.html strictly a CPU bench test (hence the name).

Like I said, there are many more out there but it just depends on what you want. I personally like the 3dMark series because I like to benchmark my video card.

however, keep in mind that benchmarks do not TRULY tell u how powerful ur computer is. they are completely synthetic and can only give a rough estimate. dont get me wrong they are fairly accurate most of the time.

if u want to really test the true power of your computer i suggest u download FRAPS http://www.fraps.com/ this runs in background while you are running a game.

fps in a game gives a sense of how powerful your motherboard, ram, gpu and cpu are. mostly the latter two.

I did the CPU BENCH and I received a 10. Isn't that a bit bland? What does a 10 mean? is that good? Thanks
