Smile Advice on building

Hi, Im thinking of building my own PC for the first time, and I want some advice on what components to get. Here's what I have so far.

GFX Card: Radeon X800 XL Video Card
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 FX55
Mobo: Asus K8N-E Deluxe
Hard-drive: 2x 120G Maxtor DMax+9 SATA150/7200 8MB

I havent decided on a case yet, and frankly I have no idea about PSUs.
I want to be able to play the latest games as best as I can with a decent budget (Hopefully with a total of under £1000)

How can I tell which forms of RAM will be compatible with the set-up so far?

Thanks in advance

If I were you and on a budget, I would scale down the video card to something like a GeForce 6600GT. As for your RAM, you need 184 pin DDR DDR400 (PC3200) like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440

The Ultra is quite a lot more expensive than the ATI X800 XL; is it really worth spending an extra £170 to get it?

If you are any sort of budget at all, why are you getting an FX-55? That thing is so over priced. I think a 3700+ San Diego would be a much better choice and that would open up a lot of room for the gfx card. I would go with a 6800GT over the x800xl, and if you downgrade the cpu, you could even go with a 7800GTX possibly.

My budget was £1000, I assumed I would have been able to get a good set up at £1000 even with the FX-55. Thanks for the suggestion, the San Diego seems to be a better choice so far

Where are you shopping to get your parts?

Have a look at www.overclockers.co.uk for the deals they have on (Leadtek sale is on now for the GPU's.) Generally OCUK are quite expensive, but they have fast bandwidth so are ideal for specing out your PC.

Pick out a nice ATX case that you like, if you need more harddrive space there is room in the budget for that. The CPU's are on a deal this week as well. If you wanted the 4000 it is £76 more. The RAM is also overclocking RAM, if you never ever plan on overclocking there are cheaper alternatives.
