Adding an IDE drive to comp w/ single SATA boot drive

What master/slave setting should I put the drive on and do I need to do anything to get the computer to recognize it?

I tried using the IDE hard drive ribbon cable, placing the IDE drive on the 1st (master) cable and in master setting as well as no jumpers and neither time has the comp recognized the additional hard drive.
