The normal ATI Radeon 9800 should still outperform a Radeon 9600XT.

Although the newer 9600 come with the 9800 core which means that in theory you can overclock it to the 9800 mark, you're still lacking 4 pipelines in the cards and therefore, data processing will be slower. There is a way to unlock the 4 remaining pipelines in the 9800 SE and you can find it by doing a google search.

I did some benchmarking tests on an AMD64 w/ Corsair XMS PRO 3200C2 400/500 Mhz.

The Radeon 9800 PRO (128 Mb) outperformed the Radeon 9600XT (128 Mb) and (256 Mb)

you can softmod the 9800 to a pro

i know, but can you softmod a sapphire 9800se to a regular 9800? If so, can u tell me the program which can softmod the card to unlock the pipelines
