Monitor problem while playing game

Yesterday my sister was playing one of the sims 2 expansion pack games..and during the game she gets this message:

--monitor is working out of scan range, change pc setting--

ive searching google about this error but cant seem to find the right fix.

the odd thing is that she can play the regular sims 2 w/ no probs..but the expansion packs are the problems.

The expansion packs probably run at a resolution that the monitor doesn't support. If possible, go into the game settings and change the resolution to 800*600 or something like that.
