So here my problem.

I have a 80 gig master and a 40 gig slave. A few days ago I got a virus after downloading a keygen for my friend. My Norton took care of it immediately and there were no visible problems. Upon the next startup my computer was slow as ****, took me almost a minute to open my documents. The busy light on my CPU was always on, yet in task manager the cpu usage was only 2% (which is normal when its idling)

My slave was not effected, so i figure i just switch them up so the 40 would be the master, and 80 slave. That way I could start my comp up, and I could just scan the 80 gig for any problems. But when I hooked them up (40 gig as the master) all I got was a black screen. No Windows Xp startup (there wasn't even a message saying no operating system found).

So it seems when i run the 80 gig as a single drive, something is severely slowing it down, and I cant run it as a slave.

any ideas on how to solve this? any input would be greatly appreciated. I got 30Gb torrent file im downloading on that drive, cant lose it.

Just my Thoughts

Did you change the jumper settings when attempting to switch master and slaves drive round?

Did you have win XP installed on the (new) master?

Did you run the keygen program after pulling it off?

If it was me in the same scenario I'd be thinking trojan. Particuarly if the system slow down was that apparent after downloading that particular file. With that said I'd be going through a multitude of trojan scanners and spyware scanners to try and isolate the potential trojan (and crossing my fingers that it wasnt a real nasty one)

Just my thoughts.

Ding

Yep...that slave won't boot without having the XP installed. You need to download Adaware and Spybot Search and destroy on that system. They are free:

I'll bet you have a whole bunch of spyware running in the background and Norton won't find it!!!!!

I tried all of those. I have XP on both drives, jumper setting seem ok (the 80 gig has 5 setting, the 40 only has 4, so i tried my best here)

I still cant seem to connect the 40 gig as my master, I can connect it as a single, but not as a master. With that said, its impossible to even run spybot because that would mean running it of the 80 as a single (because i cant connect it as a slave), and the system slowdown is so big i dont have a chance of even starting it up.

Try this: Put your system back the way it was intitially and then boot into the SAFE mode (F8). Do a System Restore, in safemode, for a time last week. Let me know what happens. I'm beginning to think you have a driver corruption issue and restore might help.
