I own a Dell Optiplex GX270 with Windows XP Pro.
When I turn on my computer, the monitor displays the normal black and
white Windows screen (where it says in the upper right hand corner:
Press F2 to Enter Setup and Press F12 to Enter Boot Menu). Once the
white progress bar in the center of the screen reaches 100%, the
computer IS SUPPOSED TO then display the colored Windows XP screen
with the sliding blue progress bar. However, instead of displaying
this colored screen, the hard drive spins for a second and then the
computer goes into an idle state and nothing is displayed on the
screen. It is evident that the PC isn't outputting anything to the
monitor at this point because the monitor's input LED is off.
However, the PC is still on and the hard drive can be heard quietly
idling.
I'm pretty sure neither the monitor nor graphics card is the problem;
I've tried multiple monitors and video cards with the same result. In
addition, I have run Window's built in diagnostics on the hard drive
and Memtest86 for the memory, both of which the computer has passed.
I'm thinking that the problem lies somewhere in the Windows partition
of the hard drive because I can successfully boot into a BartPE
environment, and I can access with no problem files on other parts of
the hard drive. I have reinstalled Windows, yet this booting problem
refuses to disappear. When I reinstalled Windows, I was required to
delete the partition of the previous Windows installation, so I did.
Is this the same thing as doing a "clean install?" Could something
from my previous Windows installation be causing problems, or has all
the old stuff been deleted?
Something that suggests the problem is hardware related is the fact
that while most of the times I try to boot this problem occurs, on
rare occasions the computer will boot just fine. Some piece may be
breaking, causing it to only function some of the time.
Any ideas?
