Video card--128? or 256?

I am going to buy a Geforce 5200 but can't decide whether I should spend the extra money to get the 256 instead of the 128. How much does the extra memory help in preformance in gaming. I'm wondering whether or not the 256 will help seeing as I only have 256mb of rd.

I would advise another card, but if you really want to stick with the 5200, go for the 128mb. These mainstream cards aren't powerful enough to actually utilize the 256mb vid ram. Hell, sometimes companys give them crappier ram.

I agree, the fx5200 isn't worth the money, if you want a decent cheap card just buy the g4 mx 440 and save yourself a 15 or 20 bucks. as far as the ram i doubt you would notice a difference between them right now.

Actually, I have a GeForce FX 5200, and its 128MB DDR, its really good. You don't need 256mb, unless , actually you don't. Games aren't high end enough quite yet to need 256. Stick with the 128.

Unless you are running a 19 or 21 inch monitor, you don't need 256Mb. If you are still going for nVidia, then I would suggest some thing like FX5600 if you have the extra cash.

256 MB is simply a waste for the GeForce FX 5200 in terms of gaming.

Upgrading your system RAM amount has benefits; it can help eliminate/ assuage stuttering issues in games, and nowadays applications are becoming more demanding. You can never have too much.

it wouldn't really depend on the monitor size, it's the resolution (fron 640x480 to 2048x1538) and colour depth (16 or 32 bit) and sometimes, the complexity of the images that determine the amount of RAM it uses

I'd reccomend a Radeon 9200/9600 over the FX5200
by what I've heard, the Radeon 9200 outperforms the FX5200

yeah i agree with what everyone else said, if you are getting a FX5200, go with the 128mb.

everyone says you dont really need 256mb, well need is one thing, and then want is another
ive got a FX5600 256mb, of course i didnt 'need' it, but i wanted it
but it really comes down to how much you are willing to pay aswell.

For gaming, 128MB memory for graphic card is very sufficient already. Is more better if your can add RAM on your machine rather than for graphic card. ( At least 512MB for Win XP User )
Is just waste your money to get FX5200 or ATI9200.
If you want to buy graphic card, try get the GF FX5600 above or ATI 9600 above. 1 more thing very important in buying graphic card is that remember to buy the 128bits.

U wont' use 640x480 resolution on a 19 or a 21 inch monitor.
So in simple terms, the video RAM required indirectly depends on the monitor size.
