This should be pretty simple. Most recent laptops include two video-out options and one audio out - the headphone jack (obviously).
Depending on your laptop, you probably have a VGA or DVI video out, which you would hookup to a external monitor or projector. You're second video-out is probably S-Video (what DVD players typically use).
For sound, you just need a Stereo 3.5mm Plug to Stereo RCA Y-Cable. If you look around you should be able to get both for under $10.
Use the S-video cable & plug it into one of your TV inputs. Take the audio cable from the headphone jack to the same TV input for audio. Switch your display to external (on most laptops its Fn + F4). Email me if you need help.
