Problem with headphones

The sound on the headphones I use on my computer is extremeley quiet (barely audible) even on the highest volume setting. These headphones have always been like this. What could be the problem? Is it the headphones or could it be the settings on my computer?

Possible that the headphone jack is just barely plugged in, recheck the connections.

Try a seperate sound card and different headphones.

Are they the bigger style/ closed can? The bigger they are the higher ohm load. So it depends on the output of the headphone jack on your powered speakers. For instance, a smaller pair would only need to be turned to about 9 oclock but a larger more expensive pair will need to be turned up past noon for the same "loudness".
