Is a COLD hard drive a bad thing?

Yes, but CPU's are a different story. They are chips that don't have any moving parts like hard drives. Hard drives have spinning platters and of course the head that moves across the platters to access the data. But that is a cool project, no pun intended.

A HDD has extremely precise components inside it, if they move even a very minute amount, it could screw up the drive. If you manage to crack the platter from extreme cold to instant heat, you're going to have a cool looking paper weight.

Now, I doubt it is getting cold enough to do any harm, so you should be okay.
