Power distribution question

Hi, i'm upgrading from a 6800gs to a 7900gt and i have a 500w psu. I've heard people have been able to run a 7900gt on a 480w psu. But i also have 2 external fans, a pci slot exhaust fan, 2 hdds, 2 disk drives, and all the other essentials. And i was wondering if maybe i'd have to get a psu with more watts. What i was planning on doing is removing the power cable from my second disk drive and using the outlet from that to hook into my new card. Does it matter if some power cords are left unhooked? as long as they aren't a big part in completing a circuit or anything.

Yes it's ok to leave some power connectors un-hooked.
