Hi,

Gateway Solo 1450

This is my brother's laptop, but I told him I'd fix it for him.

It seems that the left bracket holding the monitor on has came off, or the monitor plastic has been cracked. You can open the laptop and push it back it, yet when you close it, the monitor pops off. Here's some pictures.

Also, something else has been acting up on it.

You can boot it up fine and work on it for about 2-4 hours, then it suddenly turns dreadfully slow. It takes about 3 hours to open IE, 4 hours to boot, etc. It stays that way for a week, then it goes back to it's normal speed, then slows down again. I personally have NO idea what could be causing this. I've reformatted it a couple times.

Would it be cheaper to just buy another laptop? This one does have some nice specs though....

Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest whatever caused the cracked monitor mounting (dropping it, hitting it or whatever) may have caused the slow down problem. Did it come about at the same time or after?

Other than that, I can't help.

Good luck!

I wonder if the slow down is the automatic voltage and speed drop used by the laptop to conserve power and lower heat. It sounds like it underclocks the processor and then never brings it back up to normal when the power is needed.

yea it does, it has Speedstep™ technology...im not a laptop person, only desktop, so i dont know how to disable it, but my best guess would be in the bios (as i said, i got no idea about laptops, only used one for like 2 weeks and took it back for a desktop) some setting in there somewhere. if not, maybe in the os somewhere.
