Windows Media failing to play certain video types

Hey all,

Windows Media Player has been giving me this error upon opening .wmv files:

I can open mpeg videos with no trouble, but .wmv and possibly other video types will produce that error message. I have no idea what is causing this.

-It has happened with both Windows Media Player 9 and Windows Media Player 10. I'm currently using WMP9, and it appears to be fully updated.

-I'm running Windows XP Home on a fairly powerful system.

-I can work around it by opening an mpeg and then dragging other videos into the playlist, but this is a big inconvenience.


Any help is appreciated. Let me know if additional information is needed.

Google Codecs Packs and find a codec pack for playing more media files on your computer. Youll have to read up on them but there are quite a few out there and there free. One good one is gordian knot .

I checked that out... didn't feel like mass installing six different codecs. Are you sure that's the likely solution to this?

Isn't .wmv like, the default Windows Media file? There's got to be some problem here other than a missing codec. Doesn't it tell you if you're missing a codec and give the option to install it?

Try another Music player, such as Winamp.
