There are several updates to the original release of Media Centre. Some are security, some stability. Not many improvements to functionality as I remember. Probably still worth getting them though, to keep your PC secure if nothing else.
like any XP system it doesn't 'need' the updates. if you are happy with the way that it is running without then you can just forget them. but keep in mind that the security and bug fixes will not be installed.
