windows xp startup options

A friend of mine just deleted a couple of his registery files, he says that he is getting the windows picture but then nothing else happens.
I was wondering is he could get nto safe mode by getting the menu up. restoring to a previous restore point.

is it possible?

how does one get to the safe mode in windows xp? is it F4? and then the option?

F8, try it out cant hurt

F8, then press it again, and then select Safe Mode (i think)
