That would be a very stupid business decision!!! Vista is their latest and greatest. They are not gong to undercut Vista sales doing a retructure of the Hive in XP!!!!!

They are going to release a DX9L for XP which will basically be DX10 but slightly downgraded. Vista will be expensive and DX10 cards are still astronomically expensive. MS is not banking on DX10 to sell vista. Games like Crysis will run impressively on DX9 cards because Crysis will have to make compatablity in order to sell any games at all.

"L" stands for Longhorn.

DX9L is for backwards compatability within Vista so you can play DX9 games flawlessly. Originally it was thought that DX9 games would not be supported, but DX9L makes them so.

Don't get Home Basic, its a crippled version of Home and has a lot of features that you may or may not need, disabled. Most people are going to go for Home Premium and that's around $160 for the upgrade.

why would the l stand for longhorn?

they have completely dropped the whole long horn thing from what ive read because of the really crappy longhorn beta os

Longhorn was the codename for Vista, and is still used. Microsoft is going to name it's DirectX versions after the codename (more professional), not the retail.

Nice Ubuntu flaunting, General. :D
