I placed USB printers (HPLJ1012) in the exam rooms of a pediatric clinic so the Docs could connect their laptops (Toshiba tablet M200) to them to print prescriptions, etc. The problem is that every USB device has a unique identifier so the OS attempts to install a new device for every LJ1012 they connect to. Needless to say, this is not acceptable since a clinic with 20 exam rooms would have 20 printers defined and they would have to pick the right one each time.

Any ideas, work arounds, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unfortunately there is no easy solution to this problem...

If you really want to keep this setup, I would simple get all of the laptops and connect them to each printer BEFORE giving them to the DR's. Like that, when they go to the clinic rooms, that printer has been previously configured.

It will be a headache for you during the initial setup but, you won't hear the complaining from the doctors.

How many laptops are we talking about here?

How are they connecting. Actually plugging it in the USB port or is there a wired or wireless network of some sort.

Right now we have about 20 of the HP1012 printers deployed but were planning on deploying more of them in the near future if a resolution can be figured out with the USB connectivity. The laptops are wireless but the doc's are connecting the printers into the usb port on the laptop when they come into the room.

They are not wanting to have to select a printer each time they come into the room and they are not wanting to print to a network printer. They are wanting to be able to just plug into the usb port and be able to print without having to configure or select anything (printers).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
