could anyone please advise me on what would be the cheapest way to get server 2003 software to practice on. do i have to purchase a server with software on it or how would i go about getting started. i could learn better if i had the software at home to practice on, but i don't know what i should do. i am new to networking and have just purchased a book on server 2003.

You can download a trial version good for about a month from the microsoft website. That should get you started.
