Ok today I decided to give it a bit of a go, after my brother has fully moved over to it from windows.

Everything is awesome. :) I'm enjoying it mostly, after spending a few hours getting things to how I want them -- which would probably only take less time on windows because I've done it so many **** times.

Here's a site people may find useful, I certainly did, its mostly just a huge long guide to everything you'd want to do in Ubunbu that doesn't come as standard. (mp3 + DVD playback for example, or p2p clients like DC++ and Torrent clients.)

The only thing I can fault is the monitor/resolution detection by X. which is irritating, and not a simple thing to fix. Basically the thing I need help with now is setting the resolution to 1280x1024 at 85Hz. I CAN get it to any resolution, but changing refresh rates is beyond me apparently... Twice I accidently destroyed it so X couldn't start, luckily I'd made backups and remembered how to fix it all

so yeah... hopefully someone can save me from doing it again :p

If you specify the monitor we can give you the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates which would solve the refresh rate problem.

You mean you have tried using (under the monitor section):

# V-freq: 50.00 Hz // h-freq: 52.78 KHz
Modeline "1280x1024" 85.72 1280 1328 1432 1624 1024 1024 1026 1055

or

HorizSync 30-95
VertRefresh 50-160

*note- use one or the otehr at a time.

I used the second one,

HorizSync 30-95
VertRefresh 50-160

sorry about being so light on the details, I'm pretty new to linux stuff so I don't know what's specifically relevant, please bear with me :)
