yeah the mobo is crap (it mite not b the best out there but it would get the job done with minimum difference) i know that but actually it was 2 gig ddr2 i added that twice and yeah it was crappier ram than xms. i agree with you guys meithan's build is the best so far and i would reccomend going with the 8800gts unless you want to wait a couple months and get aatis r600 which, if it proforms like they say it should, will be a good deal better than 8800.

yeah the mobo was crap but it would get the job done with a minimum difference and the ram i know isnt as fast as xms but it would do fine. Meithans build is prob the best but i would reccomend going with the 8800 as deathhawk said or if you feel like waiting a couple months and getting the r600 instead. if it proforms as they say it should then it should be a good deal faster than the 8800. Thats my opinion.

and he may not even need a monitor. when you build a system the the components usually change on a budget if you need a monitor.

where's the ram and hard drive?

OK, this person could fit the 8800GTS into Meithan's build if they don't need to buy a monitor, keyboard, mouse or OS and are willing to get 1GB of ram instead of 2GB and upgrade to 2GB later.

1GB Gskill $115

What do you guys think about doing that?

I have 1GB. Will upgrade later.

But I don't see the point here people. The 8800 is just for bragging rights at the moment, because it's so expensive. The price will drop dramatically in the following months, much faster than the normal drop in computer parts prices. Get something like a 7900 for now, and get a GeForce 8 when it's at a reasonable price.

yeah, that's true...but if he's gonna wait for prices to go down he might as well just get a 7600GT like me...I have no problem running any game right now including Oblivion and he'd save $100 going that route.

also if he waits for prices to go down he might as well just get 2GB of ram and save up...i'm guessing that he's not gonna wait for prices to go down though...

It's really up to him. Where is he anyway??? He hasn't replied to anything we've said. On another thread (that died), he posted: "My budget is $1,400-1,500 and I need everything including monitor, keyboard etc."

Anyway, I've reviewed my build. I downgraded the PSU, downgraded the video card to a 7900GS (it still owns the 7600GT by 20%-30%), and added a Case, Keyboard, Mouse and Speakers, to complete the build.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - $308.00

GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 - $146.99

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800 Dual Channel Kit - $214.99

eVGA GeForce 7900GS KO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $169.99 ($149.99 after $20.00 mail-in rebate)

Western Digital Caviar 250GB SATA 3.0Gb/s - $69.99

LG Black 16X Super-Multi DVD Burner - $29.99

Thermaltake Purepower 600W - $94.99 ($69.99 after $25.00 Mail-In Rebate)

X2GEN Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - $146.99

Cooler Master Cavalier 3 Black ATX Mid Tower - $59.99

Logitech Media Elite Black Wired Keyboard - $23.75 ($18.75 after $5.00 Mail-In Rebate)

Logitech MX518 2-Tone 8 Buttons PS/2 Optical Mouse $39.99

Logitech X-230 32W 2.1 Black Speaker System - $31.75

Shipping, UPS Guaranteed 3-day Service: $57.08
(I just used a NY zip code, but there shouldn't be too much difference)

Total: $1,379.49 minus $50 total mail-in rebates.

Voilà! There's even room for a few modifications, based on personal taste (Case, for instance).
