help with choosing.. a Bike

I don't have my drivers licence yet, but I am sure as **** not gonna use my car to drive small distances in this crowded city; unless I have to pick something up.

I have one of these:

KHS Flite 500

it's a lightweight road bike designed to go fast. it's not designed for offroad; being lightweight, it isn't strong enough for big bumps and jumps.

but it's great for going down highways at high speeds
