Can't click on anything. What?

Boot to Ubuntu (from the CD), back up data, reinstall. What did I misunderstand? Or at least boot to Ubuntu and see if the problem is software related ... if it works in Ubuntu and not in Windows, then it's software, if it doesn't work in either then its hardware.

I'm still confused. What does Ubuntu have to do with anything? This is an XP Machine. Ubuntu has nothing to do with this computer whatsoever.

General is trying to say check to see if it's software or hardware related. Because if it doesn't work with a live CD it's a hardware.

Anyways, have you ever try safe mode? or is it too late and you reformatted?

No, she hasn't reformatted yet.

Maybe I just don't understand then. What advantage would I get from it? I don't see how the CD player has any relevance here... because if I put my Ubuntu LiveCD in, and it works, then I know the CD player is fine.

Okay, but big deal. The entire system lags so severely to load applications that I don't see how knowing the CD drive works would help me.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I'm kinda stumped over how this would help me. Though I'm very interested to know more about what you folks are saying.

I think what they mean is if you can boot to the live CD, use programs, open files, browse the internet, without problems it's probably a software (windows) problem. If not, if programs in Ubuntu lag still and you have the same or similar application problems, it most likely is a hardware problem, RAM, CPU, H/D etc.

edit: Have you downloaded and run memtest yet? If not, it would be a good tool to use. I am starting to suspect RAM.

I don't know, I'm strongly leaning towards it being Windows just messing up. She told me the other day she tried to download something on limewire and it was a 1970's porno or something. She deleted it and all, but noticed the next time she did a virus scan that she had 300 viruses. The virus scanner says it deleted 300, but still... what if something is in the registry yet? Maybe it's just halting all system requests to launch apps. *shrug*
