Go to the command prompt and type in
Code:
chkdsk d: /f

Reboot the computer and check disk will run after Windows boots up.

Did the utility actually run after the Windows boot screen? It should be a blue background with white letters saying that it's working on Stage 1 of 3, 2 of 3, and finally 3 of 3. I think it reboots again after it's done and you should boot normally into Windows again.

Did it run and finish without any errors?

yes it ran all the tests adn went to the windows boot screen and everything went fine. But every time I try to defrag the d volume I get that error message.

You have a 'scheduled' chkdsk... check your "scheduled tasks" in control panel.
Also, in a command prompt, check out the chkntfs utility. (chkntfs /?)

Update: I ran into this problem yesterday, and it was a little severe, all commands from prompt would error out.
Installing MS XP Updates solved it somehow... I think it was corrected with SP2 installed. Maybe an OS bug that was fixed.

Are you running SP2?
