Help with games etc,,,,,,

Hello all.

My computer is fairly up to date,

260GB HDD
256 NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD
1GB RAM
WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION SP2
SOUND CARD
ETHERNET
USB 2.0
ETC

Ifind when i play a game the system almost comes to a hault, my friend tells me that its to do with when you end a programme part of it remains open, and does not let the pc have it back until restart?

I used to have a programe that would end all the safe processes but no luck in finding it?

This problems occurs when the computer is left on for 3 or more hours.

or just after startup when i play a game

all the fans kick in on the video card i think, it might be to do with heat, ive had a new fan installed in the back of the machine?

any more ideas? can i sedn you a log????

I would think heat could be a problem make sure the CPU heatsink if free of dust and put thermal paste on the heatsink also. After the computer shuts off when you reboot go into BIOS and under PC health look at you temps. To see if that is a problem. You didn't mention which CPU you have but it shouldn't be over 45 or so Celcius.
