For yet another “little bit more” I can get 2Gb (2 x 1Gb) ddr2 sdram at 800mhz instead of 667mhz. Will I see any real benefits with it going into a Core 2 Duo E6600 machine with a Geforce 7900GS video card?

Current usage is 40% work (spreadsheets, word processing and e-mails), 20% web surfing, 25% gaming (not too much high powered stuff but getting there) and 15% watching movies dvd's.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a very high power system that will blow everything away except for the most demanding games. I just built a E6300 system with DDR2 667 RAM which was substantially cheaper than DDR2 800 ($118 versus $174 for 1 GB). In my opinion with 2 GB of either RAM, your only limitation will be your video card.

Cheers!

Performance has been noted to slow down (albeit not a lot) with DDR2 667 memory when paired with a Core 2 Duo, if you want the absolute best power and performance for your machine.
