So basically you have a

P4 2.4 ghz

1 GB of Ram

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT

Those specs will play todays games on medium settings. Can you not play games at all or something? How low are your frames per second.

my frames for battlefield 2142 are 15-25 on low settings and even a game like men of valor only runs at 30 maxed out and that was made in 2004, i was thinking about getting a p4 3ghz, and a geforce 7800 256mb, with a new motherboard. wud that help performance by alot?

if ur gonna go ahead and get a new mobo, processor, and gpu, get a Core 2 Duo setup(e6300 or higher) , or a AMD 64 X2 3800+ or higher. the 7800gt is an alright card, but i suggest either the 7900 or 7950 gt's. you can go ati, but it tends to be alot more expensive. but if you want to go all balls on the pc, get 2 7950GX2 in SLI, and get a FX-60 or E6700

i was thinking about getting 1 gig of ram and a 7600 for now and seeing how that goes then maybe upgrading to 3ghz unless someone thinks i shud upgrade my pc first (dont have much money at the moment and can only do 2 upgrades at the moment, have no pci-e slot)

Try some basic stuff like updating your graphics drivers and cleaning up your PC(reduce the amount of background processes, disk cleanup, defragment). These should all increase your PC's performance (however slightly).

I can only assume if you're getting 15fps you already installed your chipset drivers for the mobo...but it never hurts to ask:-D

For a quick fix get another 1 GB of Ram and a Geforce 7 series graphics card.

Also consider formatting your computer, and re-installing everything again. That always makes things run a little faster.

I would suggest that you update your drivers (NOT the bios), as well as try to close some of the background process'.

I have noticed that chat programs and virus scanners and such take up a lot of memory.

Also keep in mind that Firefox doesnt REALLY close when you close it, so you will want to close that from the process' menu.

Hope that helps,
Dex

i have tried closing every program i can think of and it doesnt seem to help, is there difference types of processors?

as in could mine be an old model of a 2.4ghz? its about 3-4 years old or something
