xp hiding software installation progress?

Hi, I've never had this problem before, but I just recently installed windows xp pro on my computer, and when I install software, for one reason or another it hides the progress of the installation, so that the software installs, but I'm clueless to the progress, because nothing appears in my task bar, and I come back like 5 minutes later and whatever I was working on somehow finished. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this, and if there is an xp setting to change it so that it shows software installation... I'm not sure why this is happening.

run that, install it, reboot then try to install something again

I installed windows installer 3.1 and then tried to install a game from my dvd drive, and it didn't appear to fix the problem. I now just received "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" error after waiting for the dialogue to appear.
