Hi all, my desktop has an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ & 512mb RAM, and I'm looking to buy a new laptop with a Core Duo T2300E & 1GB RAM in it. I have no idea how desktop and laptop processors compare to each other.

Should this laptop perform close to or better than my old desktop?

Thanks

it should perform considerably better unless it overheats/battery is running out and it goes into low power mode. for starters it's a dual core (two processors on one processor chip) which means you can multi-task with reckless abandon. having two processor cores gives you the ability to run two applications at once that would normally take virtually all processor power e.g. a game and video encoding. if you do video encoding or other things that have "SMP" enabled software you'll have near twice as much power as a similar single core. as it is that processor should have more power on one processor core than your current processor

Cool thanks. So the fact that the Athlon 2800+ is 2.08GHz, while the Core Duo is 1.66GHz doesn't mean that the higher Ghz is faster necessarily?

What other factors figure into determining how fast the processor will run?
