win98? boot pc, press F7 right after post (bring up startup selection screen), choose command line safe mode, type scanreg /restore, press enter, choose a date to rollback your registry to.

hi! samuel,
i was using windows 98 when i did that. ("Disable in all hardware profiles")
but i installed windows xp after that
but com port is not detected now
thatz the problem

Check your BIOS and enable the ports you want to have working. If you installed the OS and there is still a problem it might be in the BIOS or look for an update for your chipset drivers.

Where should i go for the options in the BIOS i have AMI BIOS....
How can i update my chipset drivers
the port was working untill i did that, after that it ceased function
please assist

To check the settings in your BIOS probably look under Advanced chipset features, PNP/PCI configurations, or the last place to look would be in Integrated Peripherals. Some BIOS setting are in different locations within the BIOS. Check each location til you come across the right area. Sorry I can not be of further assistance to you.

As far as updating your chipset drivers, you can find them on the motherboard manufacturer's website. Look under drivers and downloads when you find the motherboard model number. They should have any and all updated drivers for your computer.
