Ok the beep came back after a CMOS reset, but only when the card is in the 2nd slot...
Combination of a bad card and PCI-E slot perhaps?!

Right, I'm assuming the boards ok as I get a different beep with everything out (one continuous beep).

Given that the board supports SLI is it possible that this has to be disabled via a jumper on the mobo (though obviously I can't see one!)

Right, I've thought this through, and I reckon it's that the PSU isn't supplying enough power to run everything when the gfx card is plugged in, hence the no beeps when it's in the top slot. It's only a 300W PSU so this is perfectly possible right? If it's not supplying enough power would the fans etc. still spin up?
