well i have seen some cases, namely those manufactured by iCute that have raised points on the motherboard tray that are tapped for screws to mount the motheboard. these iCute cases and similar do not need any brass stand offs or the like for mounting a board, in fact if you use them the board will not be aligned with the I/O plate or PCI slots.

Some motherboards come with small standoffs that you clip-in, instead of those brass ones that you screw in place.

plastic standoffs are you talking about? ones that you can take apart to fit the motherboard inbetween?
