CD drive not recognised?

For the past few weeks my CD drive has not been listed in my computer, putting a disk in has beheld no response and deleting various virtual drive programs has had no effect, I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware problem or a software problem.

Can anyone help?

im guessing that u havent touched anything in the pc,
1. the ribbon cable might of been gotten loose (IDE)
2. the ribbon cable died on u
3. check if jumpers are correctly plugged
